You can also do savestates so that once you have it up and running perfectly, you can image it and then if you break it you don't have to reinstall everything from scratch again.This is the SUPER runaround way but the benefit here is you have the capability to get 3dfx glide running in the native emulation. Any game that doesn't require 3d hardware or lots of 2d optimization can be played pretty much perfectly (Magic School Bus games, Encarta series, Diablo 1, Virtual Springfield, etc.). There are good aspects to this, though. Note that even though you are enabling 2d and 3d hardware acceleration, I have yet to get it to work in any reliable capacity and more often than not causes the guestOS to lock up.As you can see, a big pain in the butt.
I never felt the need to really, really play that game, whatever that might be, so as to build a whole PC to play it. I find most games worth playing from those eras can, somehow, run again on modern PCs (either through DosBox, combinations of solutions like Glide wrappers and NTVDM sound, virtualization or "upgraded versions" and custom installers - see Legacy of Kain as an example).That's the key here. And I've got a mini collection of mobos (3-4), CPUs (same number) and, mainly, GPUs (around a dozen) from around twenty five years of PC gaming (voodoo 1, 2, Banshee, 3500, Rage 3D, Matrox Millenium, stuff like that).But never got to build a retro PC. It had a Matrox Mystique, if I'm not mistaken was either a Cyrix or Pentium 200-something, so it should be great for early Win 95 games.

Agreed that FX series wasn't the best but far from a slouch and still definitely sufficient for running older games. For anything that needs more, glide wrappers are also totally usable and can effectively up the compatibility for these games to run on XP without issue.But that's getting very nitpicking. If you want old Unreal engine stuff, or Diablo 2, or any of the other handful of games that needs it, a 3dfx voodoo 3 should be sufficient. Seriously, I've yet to find a VIA-based board that the 4-in-1 or 5-hyperion mobo drivers did not install on.Glide is not really a necessity depending on the games in question. And yes, it can be used to play and run many, many things that don't work well under modern Windows systems.I'm totally on board with Wine, so consider than when reading my response, as I'm not disagreeing with you on the feasibility of Wine for running multiple Windows programs from across its own lifecycle, nor the viability of Wine today in any way.The original poster did specify that they only had a windows 98 image they wanted to run, and never mentioned any specific applications or processes. I've not had much experience with KVM switches but I'm sure they can be made to work on 9X.Indeed Wine progress from when I first started tracking it during the late 2000s is nothing short of remarkable. I can't think of a title offhand that would need more and only run exclusively run on 9X, but I am also able to admit when I'm wrong if presented with one :)Room is something that will always be an issue, but if someone has the desire for it, they can make it work.
